I attended the festive and entertaining Trumpet Awards show in Atlanta, Georgia. The Trumpets have always been one of my favorite award shows created by the courageous Xernona Clayton who worked alongside Ted Turner for many years. Xernona created the Trumpet awards as she saw a void of award shows that truly celebrated the achievements and accolades of African-American business and creative professionals. I rarely get an opportunity to get back to Atlanta, (a place where I was raised) so every year I try hard to attend the Trumpet Awards and this year being the 20th anniversary of the show was no different. This year I had several clients involved. Ambassador Nicole Avant was honored as the youngest Ambassador appointed to the Bahamas. Estelle performed Thank you and a medley alongside musical peers and powerhouse vocalist Ann Nesby and Kim Burrell. Tyrese Gibson was honored with the Pinnacle award and Earth Wind and Fire, Emmitt and Pat Smith, Ted Turner and Mayor Cory Booker were also honored. My highlight of the show was when honoree and show supporter since day one Ted Turner recounted the day when Xernona asked him if he would air and fund the Trumpet Awards. He shared that he was always as owner of CNN the first to arrive in the office and the last to leave. He said the same about Xernona. He said she would be the lone person there when he arrived and toiling into the wee hours with him at night well past the time when all other workers had departed. It was that passion, determination and work ethic that made him quickly without pondering agree to support her vision when she asked if he would not only air the show on his network but fund the show as well. He has been doing so since it’s inception. He ideally allowed for this important platform that celebrates and honors African American achievement to be birthed and for that Ted Turner we thank you!

New Years Eve 2012

2011 ended with me being grateful for the abundance of blessings that have been bestowed upon my life. This NYE was spent in Miami with my family and with my girlfriend Kim Porter and my God Babies Jesse James and D’Lila Star at the Star Island Estate of their Father Sean “P Diddy” Combs. Sean is the master at entertaining so bringing in the year at his home under the midnight sky of Miami was exhilarating. The private dinner, followed by fellowship and dancing and the firework display that filled the harbor was nothing short of spectacular. New Years is a time for many to reflect on the blessings and challenges of the year gone by and embrace the new horizons ahead. For me it is always a reflective time to ponder my next adventure and the rest of my life’s journey. I get no greater joy than spending the holiday with my Family and the folks who are near and dear to me. For me there is nothing more important than appreciating all of the mercy, grace and FAVOR that God has bestowed upon my life. Welcome 2012 I hear you have amazing things in store for those who believe!

I attended the launch of my friend Rona’s collection Coquette Atelier being added to the highly coveted clothing haven of Bergdorf Goodman. Rona has been a style icon and vintage collector for decades and this achievement culminates her many years of hard work and dedication. Kim Cattrall and Angela Bassett attended as we took in the vintage designs showcased against the elegant backdrop at the world’s most famous retailer.

Mikki Taylor’s Book Launch

I attended the launch of the book Commander in Chic. It is a luminous collection of antidotes that truly personifies and unveils all the wonders of being a fab, chic, diva like Mikki Taylor. Mikki is one of the most elegant, polished and refined women I know. As cover editor her handprint has left an indelible mark on each and every Essence cover over the last 2 decades. She transformed every subject with ease and magnified each in ways that unearthed a microscopic lens allowing the world to see them in ways they had yet to discover themselves. Mikki is a true pillar of grace whose warm smile, wisdom and passion hovers above her persona like a cloud does the sky and pierces your heart in ways that leave you gasping to inhale more of her intoxicating aura.

Swizz Beatz Lotus Car Launch

A swanky party was held at my favorite event space the IAC building where Swizz announced the partnership between himself and luxury automaker Lotus. I have watched as this creative juggernaut has stretched his wings and grown from the young man I met producing chart topping songs for his uncle’s label at Ruff Ryders to his evolution as one of our cultures most prized marketing treasures. He has worked alongside the world most iconic brand from Christian Louboutin to Reebok to Audermars Piguet and many in between including the artistry of Basquiat. He has travelled the globe lending his golden insights to those willing to be guided by someone who is laser focused on the culture and is always steps ahead of it’s evolution. Our goal as igniters and purveyors of urban culture is to be well rounded in our lens and expanded in our vision. Swizz Beatz personifies all with a swagger few have many admire and almost all exposed to it desire to duplicate.

Having known Steve Harvey over the past 20 plus years I was thrilled to see he and his darling wife Marjorie hosting the watch launch of the Louis Vuitton collection of exceptional timepieces. Steve has done so well since entering the world of broadcast radio and I am happy to see his continued elevation as he spreads his wings and expands his orbit!

VH1’s Divas

I love the Diva’s event as this is really the one place where all the melodic soulful women of the music industry get to fellowship and honor the old and new alike on one stage. This show really showcases the diverse musical artistry of the music worlds most celebrated icons. This year’s show was no different.

From presenters such as Sherri Shepherd, NAS, and Samuel L Jackson to performers such as my girl Estelle, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Ledisi, Erykah Badu, Marsha Ambrosius, Chaka Khan, and Jennifer Hudson. The show allows the new to pay homage and tribute to the old while singing their latest releases as well. The power packed show was filled with explosive lyrical performances and heart wrenching sisterhood in song.

Hip-Hop: A Cultural Odyssey Limited Edition Launch Event

We designed the launch event for the Hip Hop culture book, the only anthology that chronicles the 4-decade history of the burgeoning culture of Hip-Hop. I was selected to design the launch event for the coveted 420-page masterpiece and I was honored to do so. After having worked with iconic Hip-Hop pioneers such as Salt N Pepa, Foxy Brown, NAS and EVE I knew I wanted this event to truly reflect the spirit of every person whose handprint could be found on the culture.

I selected my favorite New York City venue, 230 Fifth, which plays host to some of the city’s finest events. The room was filled with celebrated luminaries from a myriad of influential sectors. Kurtis Blow, Dougie Fresh and Big Daddy Kane performed as guests took a journey through 4-decades of the globally embraced culture of Hip Hop.

We all reminisced to that point in our lives when we were first introduced to hip-hop. Whether it was through the infectious beats, the impressionable fashions or the lingo that filled our neighborhoods, we all shared fond memories of the day that hip-hop culture pierced our hearts.

Art Basel

Art Basel is the most celebrated haven for art lovers. My favorite exhibit this year during Art Basel were the hip-hop portraits taken by artist/photographer Jonathon Mannion showcased and sponsored by Reebok.

Jonathan has taken photo’s of hip-hop’s greats over the years and found a brilliant, artistic way to turn the collective of images into coveted pieces of art. He captured such poignant moments that truly encapsulate the culture at it’s best. The joy, pain, and sorrow coupled with the expressive characters that represent the culture were on display for all to enjoy.

Thanksgiving 2011 at the Bowery Mission

Another year, another Thanksgiving spent at the Bowery Mission serving the homeless. I get no greater feeling than filling the hearts and souls of the disenfranchised who line up year after year for prayer….a hot meal and a bag of clothes to support their ongoing journey faced with the social ill’s that plague our world.

The smiling faces they see, the hearts that love on them and the fellowship they receive always seem to outweigh the pain and discomfort they feel – if only for that moment. I am filled beyond measure by having an opportunity to serve those who serve me by their residence and unwavering passion for life in-spite of their circumstances.
